Best doctoral thesis

The GaBi Award

To draw attention to research within drug formulation/drug delivery and biopharmaceutics, the Section of Drug Formulation within the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society has instituted a prize for the best PhD thesis presented at a Swedish university in the last two-year period. The prize is 15 000 SEK.

The application period is now open.

The GaBi Award 2026

Nominate someone for The best PhD thesis.
Apply before September 1, 2026.

Anyone who has presented a PhD thesis within drug formulation/drug delivery and biopharmaceutics or a thesis covering principles/methods with application to these areas during the period July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2026 at a Swedish university is eligible to apply. The applicant also has to be a member of the Section of Drug Formulation* within the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society.

The application shall include a justification from the applicant as to why the PhD thesis should be awarded the prize (max 1 A4 page). The justification must also be signed by the supervisor. The justification should describe the following aspects of the thesis: novelty, independence, collaboration with other research groups, the applicability of the thesis, and the scientific significance of the thesis. The justification and complete PhD thesis (summary (“kappa”) and scientific papers/manuscripts) are sent in digital form to Laura Andersson (laura.andersson@apotekarsocieteten.se) before September 1, 2026.

The board of the Section of Drug Formulation within the Swedish Pharmaceutical Society decides who is rewarded the prize. The following aspects will be assessed: project idea, independence, novelty, scientific quality, applicability and scientific significance of the thesis, collaboration with other research groups and the ability to communicate science and results in the summary of the thesis (“kappan”).

The Phabian Award

In 2004, the Section for Pharmaceutical Biomedical Analysis established an annual scholarship for the best Swedish doctoral thesis in pharmaceutical and biomedical analysis – The Phabian Award.

The name, as indicated, is an anglicized abbreviation of the section’s area of responsibility.
